Abdul El-Sayed Now Admits His ‘Medicare for All’ Would Make Government Primary Insurer; Likely Ending Your Private Insurance Plan

(SRN NEWS) – Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed says his Medicare for All proposal would make the government the primary insurer for everyone, while private companies could still offer supplemental coverage.

In a recent interview, El-Sayed described the government as the sole buyer of health care. He said that position could give it leverage to stop rates from rising. Asked whether private insurance would be replaced, El-Sayed replied that “government becomes the insurer,” adding that people would no longer rely on the private insurance system.

The comments contrast with remarks he made weeks earlier, when he suggested some people could keep private insurance if they could afford it. El-Sayed has previously supported ending reliance on private insurance as part of Medicare for All.

The proposal’s effects on taxes, health care access, provider payments and insurance-industry jobs remain points of debate. Critics argue that government control could mean higher taxes and pressure on hospitals and other providers, potentially leading to limited services or longer waits. Those outcomes are predictions, not established consequences.

El-Sayed says government coverage would guarantee health care for everyone and give the public payer more power to restrain costs. Under his description, private insurers could remain in the market, but mainly to sell optional, higher-end coverage rather than serve as the main source of insurance.
