President Trump Establishes AI Task Force; North Korea Tests AI-Assisted Ballistic Missile

By The Media Line Staff

US President Donald Trump established a White House artificial intelligence task force to assess the technology’s risks and opportunities as North Korea announced it had tested an AI-assisted intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of altering its flight path.

President Trump appointed Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as the administration’s AI czar, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing an interview with Clayton. He was appointed intelligence chief in August and will lead the new panel and deliver its findings within 120 days.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday that Trump is expected to meet AI executives this week or “early next week.” Johnson said discussions would address “the responsibilities of the companies to maintain safety and what role, if any, the government has to play in that.”

President Trump has previously expressed skepticism about warnings over AI and calls for extensive regulation. Last month, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said he resigned partly because the “people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” AI-related stocks fell worldwide after leaders at several major companies called for slowing AI development.

The president responded at the time: “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” He also said doubts about AI development would benefit China.

Separately, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Saturday that North Korea tested an intermediate-range missile incorporating AI technology. South Korea’s military said the ballistic missile traveled more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) toward the sea off North Korea’s east coast.

Kim Yo Jong said the missile is “capable of changing its flight orbit at a low altitude and AI was introduced into it” and claimed “there is no way to avoid” its attack. She said Kim Jong Un believed “any country in the world could not have access to such technology for at least several years”.

Hong Sung-pyo, senior researcher at the Seoul-based Korea Institute for Military Affairs, told AFP it was too early to determine whether North Korea’s claims about the missile’s capabilities were accurate.
