Iran FM: Hormuz Could Open Friday if US Agrees to 7-Day Proposal

By The Media Line Staff

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s seven-day proposal to the United States remains available and could lead to the Strait of Hormuz reopening Friday and negotiations resuming Saturday if Washington meets Iran’s conditions.

“Our position is absolutely clear. We presented it to the US, they conveyed their response, and we are now working on formulating our reply. If there is sincerity on the part of the Americans, the path forward is clear: if the conditions are met, the strait will reopen on Friday and talks will resume on Saturday.”

President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s proposal last month, telling reporters outside the White House that Tehran’s terms were “not acceptable.”

The plan called for initial confidence-building measures over four to five days, followed by reopening the Strait of Hormuz on day six or seven and restarting formal nuclear and peace negotiations on day seven.

Iran sought the release of approximately $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, the lifting or waiver of sanctions on Iranian oil exports and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. The proposal also called for a regional ceasefire on all fronts, including an end to attacks in Lebanon and Yemen. Tehran, in return, would restore commercial shipping and normal maritime passage through the strait.

Araghchi’s comments came as further incidents were reported in the waterway. Fars News Agency reported early Sunday that an explosion had been heard in the Strait of Hormuz and cited news sources saying a commercial vessel traveling from Oman had been attacked.

“This is the second oil tanker explosion in the strait,” Fars reported.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy said Saturday that two oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to IRNA. State media said the vessels were carrying about 2 million barrels of crude oil.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, warned Saturday that Iran was developing intercontinental ballistic missiles and pursuing nuclear weapons to threaten the United States.

“They understand that if they can destroy Israel, then they can conquer the Middle East, control the waterways of the world… and then proceed to the next target, which is you,” Netanyahu told FOX News.

Netanyahu said Iran considers the US the “great Satan” and Israel the “little Satan,” arguing that America is the regime’s ultimate target.
