US Delegation Expected in Doha as Iran, Qatar Discuss Nuclear Program, Strait of Hormuz

By The Media Line Staff

An American delegation is expected to join Iranian officials in Doha for talks after reported progress in preliminary negotiations, the Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

The expected arrival follows more than 12 hours of discussions between Iranian officials and a Qatari delegation led by a senior adviser to Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

According to sources cited by Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, those discussions resulted in preliminary understandings on Iran’s nuclear program, navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and financial incentives for Tehran. China and Russia are expected to serve as guarantors of any agreement.

Whether American and Iranian representatives will hold face-to-face negotiations remains uncertain. A source close to the mediation efforts said Qatar was pressing for direct talks, while an Iranian source said negotiations were still being conducted indirectly through mediators.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Qatari network Al Jazeera that Iranian officials had examined US Vice President JD Vance’s letter and discussed it in high-level meetings.

“The American side’s attempt to open a channel for dialogue and understanding is a positive step. But if Washington’s goal in sending the message through Vance is to sow discord, it will be another mistake added to its previous ones.”

He added, “As of now, there are no plans to meet with American officials. At this stage, we have reached with the Qataris a proposal that shortens the implementation period of the Iranian proposal by two days.”

Separately on Saturday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported an attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz near the Iranian island of Lavan.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the tanker struck a mine after “ignoring warnings and sailing in an unauthorized route” in the strait. No casualties have been reported so far.
